What’s in my barn, tack wise, is something I often get asked. I just hosted a 3-day summer workshop and the gals that attended asked me to build out this list, and the places they can get “the things”, so here goes! You’ll find links to all of these things by clicking on them – I am not being paid by any of these companies to do this! I’m simply sharing what we use here that works for us!
Ground Work Gear
Brannaman Collection Rope Halters by Double Diamond
Double Diamond, Tree Line Lead-ropes (12′)
Double Diamond, Composite Shaft Flags
XXX Ranch Rope from King Saddlery
Cheap 4’x8′ blue tarp from walmart or the farm store
Bridles/Reins/Bits
Tom Balding Ball Hinge Snaffle
Cameron Schoneberg Custom Snaffles (typically locked)
I own the bit linked – it is my favorite after the colts get started in the Balding Ball Hinge. The other snaffles I have that Cameron has made are: the same chain bit with a smooth mouth, a weighted locked ring with a Billy Allen mouthpiece, a Weighted locked ring with a double cross mouthpiece, and two mullen mouth snaffles – one square, one round.
The Perfect Bit Weighted Split reins
I like the 5/8 width.
The Perfect Bit Weighted, Adjustable Barrel Reins
The 5/8 width in these is also my favorite.
Browband Headstalls for Snaffles.
Keep your Snaffle bits on a brow band headstall for balance.
I hope you all find this list useful – if you want to see some of the groundwork we do to start colts here, be sure to check out the lateral work course, or some of the membership content!
Happy Trails!
