Clinic Drills and Wisdom

At the Bowman Barrel Racing Clinic in March of 2024, we went through drills and had lots of chats with the attendees. In the playlist below, we focused on some key things such as Figure 8s, turn and look positioning, hollow backs, points in your turn, posting the trot, and a conversation on rein usage. These key things are essential to practice and to help improve riding performance.

A few points to remember from this clinic:
  • Creating a middle section for your horse while practicing figure eights is important for you to judge distance, to determine if your horse is off-kilter, and to make sure your horse is stopping square. (See Figure 8’s around cones video below)
  • When turning to look while doing barrels, try to find a spot 3 feet away from the next barrel. You don’t want to look wider than that, because you are going to go wider than that. “Where you look is where you ride.” (See Turn & look positioning video below)
  • When we are intentionally riding and paying attention to the little things such as where the ears are; these are things to be aware of to help the horse stay physiology healthy. Stay keen to your horse’s posture. (See Bowman clinic hollow backs video below)
