Training Tip Tuesday – Posting the Correct Diagonal

In this little clip of a July 2022 ride on Doodlebug, I walk you through a few things I like to do on each ride with my horses: Posting the Diagonal, separating the hinds from the fronts which helps the horse learn to tip their weight back and why this helps your horse (and you) learn to be balanced.

What’s a diagonal?

Your horse trots on a diagonal. The trot is a two-beat gait.

When the left front is forward, the right hind is forward.

When the right front is forward, the left hind is forward. This creates a diagonal pair. Learning the diagonals, helps you to balance your weight, balance your horse’s back, and teaches you to time up with their feet. Good timing with the feet allows you to ask for the correct lead when they can successfully do it. Let’s get to it!
